The vehicle had left the roadway and struck a gas main. A Jacksonville police officer and two Jacksonville firefighters were working the scene when a van left the roadway and struck all three.

One firefighter, Capt. Donald Jones was pronounced dead at the scene. The other firefighter, Jason Bowmaster was med-flighted to a Little Rock hospital while the police officer was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital. Both are in critical condition at the time of this release.

An investigation revealed that the driver of the vehicle made no attempt to brake and even accelerated prior to striking the emergency personnel.

Bryce Allen is the son to Thelma Allen who was the driver of the vehicle that struck the gas main.

Three more taxi drivers murdered in Houston

This article about another taxi driver murdered also tells of how violent crime had almost shut down a shopping mall in the Houston area. Anyone who lives near an urban area with a large black population can probably cite  examples of shopping malls being shut down and abandoned due to  violent crime by black thugs.

Security had been beefed up after several other violent crimes -- including the abduction of a Harris County sheriff's corporal later found murdered -- occurred at the mall.

In Monday's slaying, the driver's minivan Yellow Cab was seen driving through the mall parking lot in front of Bealls Department Store about 4:30 p.m. when a gunshot was heard, Houston police homicide Sgt. George Alderete said. The taxi continued a short distance and bumped into a car.

"The (suspect) got out of the van and walked calmly into the mall," Alderete said. "As far as security keeping it from happening, I don't think they could have."

The driver was shot in the back of the head and died at the scene. Mall security officers followed the suspect and arrested him in a department store, Alderete said.


But the mall, at the North Freeway and Beltway 8, and the entire 8 1/2-square-mile Greenspoint area have a violent history.

On Sept. 30, 1991, sheriff's Cpl. Roxyann Allee was abducted from the mall parking lot. Her body was later found in a field. She had been shot to death. 

In December 1991, three men were arrested in a series of robberies and sexual assaults in the Greenspoint area. 

And in March 1992, two gunmen staged a traffic accident in the area and abducted, robbed and sexually assaulted a woman. 

Numerous other taxi drivers have been killed in recent years, including:

Jessie Guinn, 40, shot in the back of the head on June 10, 1991. Pamela Ranell Bernard was convicted of murder.

David E. Jacobs, 45, shot four times and robbed of $110 on Feb. 6. His body was found in his cab at an apartment complex in the 1500 block of Gessner.

Victor E. Bilton, 51, found dead March 23 in the 6600 block of Dumble in southeast Houston. He had been shot several times and robbed of $120. A former security guard was arrested and charged with killing Jacobs and Bilton. 

Stanley Wright, 56, shot Oct. 29 and left in the 13600 block of Darjean in far northeast Harris County. He died nearly a month later. Four men were charged in the killing.

 Arkansas College student murdered in laundromat

 A man who claims he, not an Arkansas death-row inmate, killed a university student at a Little Rock laundromat in 1993 gave conflicting testimony Friday during a federal court hearing aimed at sparing the prisoner from execution.



Stobaugh died during one of the last robberies Nooner and Rockett committed during a string that left another woman dead at a Jacksonville store and included the gunpoint robbery of a Bryant Pizza Hut.

Nooner shot Stobaugh seven times in the back and side during the robbery, only taking $20 and a checkbook as Stobaugh's unlocked car idled in the parking lot. Witnesses later testified at trial that Nooner bragged about committing the slaying and had Stobaugh's checkbook and a handgun like the one used in the crime.

Those who knew Middelstadt say she did everything to help others but they fear that is ultimately what led to her death.
